What is hair loss?

Everyone loses 50-100 hairs off their head each day. Normally, new ones replace lost hairs, but various conditions can result in excessive hair loss. These can include:

  • Androgenic alopecia (male- and female-pattern baldness)
  • Telogen Effluvium
  • Alopecia areata (patchy hair loss caused by autoimmune disorders)
  • Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia
  • Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia
  • Traction Alopecia
  • Scalp infections
  • Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder)
  • Radiation therapy and chemotherapy
  • Postpartum alopecia

Aging and poor nutrition also increase your risk of hair loss, but it can affect anyone.

Some of these conditions are temporary, so the hair grows back after treatment when the stress level or medical condition has improved. But there’s no cure for androgenic alopecia or scarring alopecia.

What is the psychological effect of hair loss?

Some people who experience hair loss face a long journey of searching for remedies to cope before reaching acceptance and may eventually embrace baldness. In the case of permanent hair loss, they may simply decide to remove any remaining hair. But for many others, hair loss significantly affects their self-esteem and confidence.

Prolonged or irreversible hair loss may trigger depression, anxiety, and social isolation. You might experience symptoms like:

  • Feeling lonely and withdrawn
  • Loss and grief
  • Embarrassment
  • Irritability and anger
  • Guilt and shame
  • Hopelessness
  • Worthlessness
  • Helplessness
  • Restlessness
  • Poor work performance

It’s common for people to worry that others are laughing at their hair loss or they consider themselves less attractive without hair. You might be afraid of people guessing you wear a wig or fear the questions they might ask about your hair loss.

What treatments help with hair loss?

See a dermatologist or other hair loss expert to determine the cause of your hair loss. You might need medication or help with hair care to address the underlying problem.
