What is substance use disorder?

Substance use disorder is a mental health condition where you become addicted to harmful substances. The most common addictions include:

  • Opioids (heroin and others)
  • Prescription opioids (oxycodone, morphine, fentanyl, and others)
  • Cocaine and crack
  • Marijuana (cannabis)
  • Amphetamines (speed)
  • Hallucinogens (LSD and others)
  • Alcohol
  • Glue and other inhalants
  • MDMA (ecstasy or molly)

These substances offer temporary highs that seem entirely pleasurable at first. But as you continue to use these substances, their effects reduce. You start taking more or changing how you use the substance.

In time, you’ll need to take higher doses just to function. Meanwhile, your body and mind suffer from the adverse effects of using these substances. Addiction can take over your life so that all you focus on is getting your next dose. Work, family, relationships, and ambitions all take a distant second place to your addiction.

If you overdose or develop a health problem because of your addiction, you can die. Please note Narcan is now available over the counter, is FDA approved to prevent fatal opioid overdoses.

What symptoms suggest I have substance use disorder?

If you need increasingly large amounts of a substance and thinking about your next dose occupies your thoughts, you likely have a substance use disorder.

People with substance use disorder can’t stop using the harmful substance they’re addicted to. If they can’t get a supply soon enough, withdrawal sets in — a deeply unpleasant period causing symptoms like:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Shaking and spasms
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Hallucinations
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Body aches
  • Seizures
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Chronic fatigue

Substance use disorder can also trigger behaviors like theft and other illegal activities to pay for the addiction.

How is substance use disorder treated?

One of the most successful approaches to treating substance use disorder is medication-assisted treatment (MAT) provided by a physician. Attending psychotherapy (talk therapy) sessions can help to address the root causes of use, and prevent relapse.

Caroline at Kente Therapy Space is a credentialed alcoholism, substance abuse counselor (CASAC). She’s certified to provide diagnostic assessments, evaluations, interventions, referrals, and substance use disorder counseling in individual and group settings.
